PARNASSUS - POLIDROSSO SPRING
The Polydrosso spring, also known as "Saint Eleousa's spring", is found
NW of Parnassos in altitude of 300 metres near the homonym village of
prefecture Fokida.
From information we have gathered, the spring had been dived only once
and for only a few meters. On July 1989 G.Spinos, D.Kompiliris and
N.Anastasopoulos, all members of SP.EL.E.O,
performed the first
exploration reaching 12 m. max depth and 30 m. penetration. According
to the
divers, the entrance was extremely narrow (only G. Spinos could pass
through, while the other two awaited him). The information comes from
D.Kompiliri and the magazine "Korfes" vol.82 (March-April 1990).
The entrance of the cavern was indeed so narrow that excluded the entry
with back-mounted configuration. However, with the use of a car jack
(Toyota
Rav4) we managed to open up the entrance.
The first metres after the narrow section are impressive: a big drowned
gallery with roots that go down from the roof and form an underwater
forest. There is also a dome of air,
of about 2 m. diameter and 1 m height. After that, the cavern deepens
and forms a very beautiful, interesting and
relatively spacious tunnel. The
water temperature is 11deg C.
The uniqueness of the dives here, of course, is that you can see two
drillings at 30 m depth!
So far we have explored the cave up to 165 m . penetration and -37 m. depth. We have performed the following dives:
