The cave of Ag.Triada is situated in the feet of mountain Ohi, near the
homonymus church, and is only 3 km far from the town of Karistos. The
cave is formed along an underwater river, where the caver moves along
the river bed (or the old river bed on a higher level).
Some history...
First exploration up to the first siphon (420 m ) was performed by mountaineers of
EOS Athinon in 1934.
In 1959, the first ever known in Greece diving attempt was made,
unfortunately without any result (only with the use of mask and
waterproof flashlight)
In 1981, during the explorations of the British Cave Diving Group (CDG)
a dive was performed in the first siphon and the diver made it 10
meters up the waterfall.
In 1982 the British (CDG) came back for a greater mission (7 cavers,
while 5 of them cavedivers) and, in co-operation with SP.EL.E.O,
performed a dive into the siphon (later on, they made an evasion
of
the siphon by digging) and got up the amazing
waterfall. John Cordingle and Geoff Crossley climbed up
the waterfall and explored the following sections of the cave, up to
the next siphon.
In the following years the cave was widely explored up to the next
(2nd)
siphon and the old river bed was discovered, amazingly decorated with
crystal-white formations. The totally explored sections of the cave are
about 1700 m. long.
In 1986, during a mission of SPELEO, cave divers K.Zoupis and
S.Georgiou accompanied by Kombiliri and Argiriadi, dived through the
2nd siphon and explored 300 m. more, up to the next (3rd) siphon.
In November 1989, SPELEO continued the exploration passing two more
siphons (3rd and 4th). Cave divers were Nikolaides, Vroutsis, Tazartes,
accompanied by Mitsakis (Nick and Vangelis) and Koutsis.
Our part in the exploration:
The explorations continued in August 2003, in 3 missions.
During our two first missions, we replaced the ropes at the waterfall and transferred the diving stuff up to the second siphon.
During the third
mission, P.Katsanos and G.Tzavelas, accompanied by A.Katsanos and
E.Giatzi, dove through 6 siphons on the whole (3 of them were newly
explored!) discovering new parts of the cave and some possible
continuations as well. The effort lasted 17 hours, while the divers
remained 6 h -of the total- past the second siphon. At this point we
should
mention that an effort to use an oxygen re-breather was made which,
unfortunately, brought up problems and thus was finally used in only
one siphon before flooding.
Later, based on the elements of the previous explorations, SP.EL.E.O
accomplished one more mission with more cavers. On 24-26th of October,
a team of 15 cavers transferred the diving material so as 3 divers
would dive through the second and third siphon and explore the new
sections discovered in August. Among the items transferred through the
siphons were ropes and harnesses in order to climb down a small pit
which was spotted during the last mission. According to information we
have, it's the first time that ropes are used in sections after diving
beyond siphons. The team explored, surveyed and photographed 300 meters
of the old river-bed, after an easy 30 m. climb beyond the third siphon.
